TiVo software coming to your PC

Talk about something I'm truly excited about...

TiVo and Nero are about to release Nero LiquidTV, which brings the TiVo interface and features to your PC. Competing directly with Windows Media Center and other HTPC solutions, this looks like a great alternative for those (like me) who have PCs built for TV recording. You will have to pay for TiVo service (a year comes with it at purchase), but if it supports subchannels on antennas, I'm in! I love TiVo, so this is fantastic news!

ReplayTV has had a similar

ReplayTV has had a similar software available for a while now- it was a year or two ago that ReplayTV got out of the DVR business and decided to move forward as a strictly software based service.

The problems I have with both services (ReplayTV and now TiVo) are that they charge a subsription fee. Yes, this TiVo software will include one free year which is a good thing, but I just can't see paying a monthly fee for what they offer when there are so many other free options out there.

MythTV works a lot like TiVo, but it's free. It does however only run on Linux. I don't have any experience with MythTV but some weekend when I have the free time I'm going to give it a try. Free vs. $200 (for the Nero/TiVo software for one year) makes it a no brainer choice for me.

(I still have an old ReplayTV DVR and love it, but at the time I got mine ReplayTV was selling their DVRs with a lifetime subscription included. I'd love to give their software a try, but I'm not about to pay a subsription fee to use it.)

Review of the TiVo/Nero

Review of the TiVo/Nero software:

I'm more interested in it now after reading that review, but the 1 to 2 hundred dollar price tag is still sticking point for me.
