First impressions: Time Warner Cable's Navigator

Time Warner Cable Navigator 2
If I said Time Warner Cable's current on-screen guide and DVR interface looks antiquated, I'd be guilty of gross understatement.  Rarely have I turned on my DVR in the last couple years without feeling a sense of nostalgia for technology past that I usually get when I pull a 5.25" floppy disk out of a shoebox in my closet.  With modern set-top platforms like those found on TiVo and AT&T U-Verse making Time Warner's on-screen guide look like a dusty DOS relic from the 80's, clearly it was ripe for change.

Well that change is slowly starting to roll into Northeast Wisconsin living rooms, and it's a welcome one.
I had the opportunity to get a private walkthrough of Navigator on one of Time Warner's HD DVRs at the cable operator's Appleton office earlier today, courtesy of Stacy Zaja, Director of Community & Media Relations from Time Warner Cable's Milwaukee headquarters.  Ironically, not all the receivers at the Appleton office had yet gotten the Navigator upgrade in advance of our meeting today, so instead of seeing the guide in action on one of their glossy, ultra-large flat-screen TV's, I was treated to a more modest demo on a good old-fashioned workstation monitor in one of their production edit bays.

Even on a 13-inch non-HD TV screen, Navigator is gorgeous.  No bones about it.  It's just pretty.  Though, seriously, anything above their current offering (Passport, I believe) is a monumental improvement.  The look of the guide is slick, polished, modern, and very readable.  This is the guide Time Warner customers have been waiting for.  The feel of the navigation feels lightyears ahead of the old system.  Menus, guides and other on-screen overlays fade in and out smoothly.  Arrowing through guide listings is much more responsive and speedy.  On-demand menus load substantially faster, and on-demand programming starts quickly too.  Other markets, including Milwaukee, have had Navigator for a while now.  While those markets initially groaned over glitches and slowness at first, those bugs appear to be worked out for the most part.  Whatever development went into Navigator between now and then, the experience feels all the more snappy, lightweight and well-thought-out for it.

If you're not so accustomed to them yet, get to know your remote control's "A" and "B" buttons.  The "A" button has become stale in the last couple years, and "B" doesn't do much outside of the guide.  In Navigator, they're given much more to do.  "A" brings up your Access menu, giving you access (get it?) to things like Caller ID on TV, the DVR show list, and settings.  One nice thing it also gives you is a list of "what's playing now."  You can find out what shows are on right now in different categories, like "Sports Now," "Kids Programming Now," and such.  It also gives you a list of the shows on right now that are in high-definition.  Give it a shot.  It's more convenient than I make it sound.

The "B" button is now the Google of your remote control.  It gives you the ability to search for shows by title, using an on-screen keyboard.  This is a very handy feature, though the keyboard (non-QWERTY) takes a bit of practice.  As you type new letters, a list refines.  Usually, you don't need to type a full title before your intended title comes up.  What's particularly nice about this keyboard search feature is that it searches both programs on linear TV channels and available programs in Time Warner's current on-demand selection.  As a current example, when you bring up the search, the movie (500) Days of Summer comes right up at the top of the list.  That movie is a new release in their Movies On Demand channel.  That can be a very convenient feature, considering Time Warner's catalog genre-based movies-on-demand channels feature many classic films at a reasonable price (compared to trudging out to the video store).  The "B" button also lets you find titles by theme, rating, and other means.  Far as I could tell, the new guide goes out two weeks instead of the current one-week span, and I believe the search encompasses that duration.  When you find a show, it also gives you the days and times that show airs in the upcoming week.

Another sorely needed feature is improved conflict resolution for the DVR.  Navigator appears much smarter in the way it handles recording conflicts, and on-screen icons show you when recordings are in opposition of other shows.  It appears to give you better options for resolving recording overlaps, and a recording log shows you what happened to recordings (ie. shows didn't record, shows got deleted, etc), so you are better able to manage your DVR.  Also new is a series manager screen in the DVR, that on my brief demo appeared much closer to modern platforms like TiVo.

When you set up a show or series to record, it gives you the option to save up to 7 of the latest episodes.  I think you are also able to save all episodes if you want, but I can't recall for sure.  You are able to set recordings to start and end earlier and later, respectively, by a minute or more past the scheduled time.  I believe it goes up to 2 hours past end time as well, which is good for sporting events.

Favorite channels, already a feature of Time Warner's guide, get a little more functional in Navigator.  While you can set favorite channels now, you can only really cycle through them using the "FAV" button on your remote.  In Navigator, you can set favorite channels to appear first in your program guide.  While not as handy as AT&T U-Verse's ability to toggle channel visibility on-and-off in the guide, it's better than what it was before.

Also improved in Navigator is parental control functionality, the settings menu and other little redo's and conveniences.  Setting display options for HDTV's is much improved, and doesn't involve going into a special menu by a secret series of button-pushes on your box's front panel.  It's all under settings.  Navigation through settings, on-demand menus and other areas of Navigator is much more polished, giving you better use of all four directional buttons on your remote.

All-in-all, Navigator is a gigantic step forward.  It's slick, sexy and functional.  As with anything new, some will gripe over having to learn things all over again.  In a way, the great channel number realignment was a good primer for customers.  This change is much more worthy of your time learning it.

What's more, the upgrade to Navigator is the beginning of more good things to come in the future to Northeast Wisconsin Time Warner Cable customers.  The software enables future feature upgrades and additional HD channels.    One future feature is Time Warner's "Look Back," which is a compliment to their current "Start Over" feature.  On available channels, you would be able to watch shows that aired already that day, even if you missed the show entirely.  The new feature just launched in Milwaukee this week, and Navigator is the first step toward that and other innovative features.

Navigator is said to give Time Warner more ability to add HD channels.  Ms. Zaja told me Time Warner Wisconsin is aiming for 150 HD channels by year's end, with the Viacom HD channels obviously next on the horizon.  Over the past year, it's been a bit depressing to see reports of other Time Warner markets hitting 100 channels while we slowly trickled past 50 in our area.  I'm really hoping their commitment to 150 HD channels this year comes to fruition.  There are supposedly some cool things coming with the upcoming Winter Olympics too, and since we have many of NBC Universal's channels in HD (Bravo, MSNBC, USA, etc), this year's games will be much better for high-def lovers than the last ones.

The biggest thing I took away from my Navigator demo?  Don't fear change.  It may change the way you record shows, browse for on-demand titles and other common functions, but it's all for the better.  Trust me.  Watch for it on your digital cable boxes and DVRs in the next couple weeks.  Be sure to let us know what you think!

Stay tuned next week for an exhaustive video comparison and tutorial on Navigator, right here at Fox Cities TV!

Mark, do you know if you are

Mark, do you know if you are able to use the number keys on the remote to enter letters in the search menu? I know AT&T and Directv allow you to use the number buttons on the remote to enter text like you would on a cellphone.

Good question. Don't know.

Good question. Don't know. I know U-Verse's remote worked that way and had the letters on the numeric keypad, but I never noticed that Time Warner's Synergy remotes did too. I'll have to defer to customers who've gotten Navigator already. I only have HD DVRs in my house so my updates won't come until next week.

One thing I forgot to mention in my review is about the remote. I know Time Warner here has two styles of the Synergy remote in use right now. One is a grey model with A, B, and C buttons. They also have a newer, slimmer, black model with an extra "D" button. I actually have one of each of these in my house. If you're able to, I would highly recommend going in a swapping your old grey remote for one of the newer black ones. The black ones have "day" left and right buttons, which make scrolling through days on the guide MUCH easier. I believe there is a way for the older remotes to cycle days too, but the dedicated buttons are nice. And the newer remotes are snazzy to boot. :)

You know I have to laugh

You know I have to laugh because I remember back in the spring of 2008 I got a call from TWC which was an automated message "in the next few weeks we will be rolling out a software upgrade that will change the way you use your TV..." I was immediately excited because I was very confident this meant Navigator was finally coming. I guess by "next few weeks" they actually meant two years.

You must have gotten a call

You must have gotten a call meant for Milwaukee.

I guess that is possible but

I guess that is possible but I thought my sister had Navigator much earlier than that.

Great job on this writeup

Great job on this writeup Mark! I'm too have two HD-DVRs in my house so it'll be next week for me as well. My parents have a standard HD Box, I wonder if they'll get it before me. I can't wait until my Dad sees everything is changed, he cannot stand changes when it relates to technology. Mark - Do you feel the learning curve should be easy for novice cable box users?

Mark's picture

I would say that for the most

I would say that for the most part, it's pretty intuitive. For the technology novices, the only issues I could see are if the upgrade process doesn't carry over settings or recordings. If all goes well in the transition, it should be a vast improvement in usability.

I do very much like that they've taken the TV setup settings out of buried walkthrough process and into the regular settings area with everything else.

OK..got the new navigator

OK..got the new navigator last evening. LOVE IT!!! Problem. Old software, when you were watching a recorded show on the DVR and then went to live TV, you switched back to channel 850 to continue your show. I'm not sure it works like that anymore... How does it work to quickly switch back to your show??

Mark's picture

That's a good question. I'll look into it. (Neither of my HD DVRs had the update yet. Will probably get it tomorrow or Friday)

Its the 8300HD. I received a recorded phone call yesterday from TWC saying they would start intallations early AM today. I haven't checked it all out yet but I like it.......

They must really be going one

They must really be going one model at a time on this thing. Got all excited when I heard HD DVRs upgraded this morning, only to find my 8300HDC's still untouched.

Have the new program guide as of this morning I see good and bad so far. I guess after I have a little time to explore it I will like it but right now I am not jumping for joy about it.

I was disappointed that the

I was disappointed that the ability to put favorites at the top of the guide listing was not an available option - at least not on my HD-dvr. It would have been nice to not have to scroll through the hundreds of channels I don't watch.

Better yet - they should allow you to remove channels from the guide.

Mark's picture

I'll check into that. It

I'll check into that. It shows that as an option in their quick start guide (bottom right of page 5).

It also mentions it on Page 2 (bottom right). Looks like there may be a option in the settings.

Program guide is

Program guide is smaller---too difficult to read. Anyone know if it can be enlarged?
Not sure why I have to reset "picture size" to "stretch" on most channels in order to have a normal looking picture. I'm not impressed. And the FF on recorded programs jumps back to end of last commercial instead of playing directly from the position on which you stopped FF....forcing you to see part of the commercial. Annoyed, like others, that when you try to toggle from "live" to your recorded program, you have to select it from the list again instead of going right back to "play from current position". Another excuse to increase rates?

tommytrc's picture

I HATE the lack of 4x fast

I HATE the lack of 4x fast forward and the jump back 10-15 seconds if you are fast forwarding. What the hell is that all about. TWC FIX THAT FAST!!! That sucks 100%. The new guide is slick, but why take out the 4x???

Mark's picture

I haven't gotten Navigator

I haven't gotten Navigator yet, but a jumpback after fast forwarding sounds like something I'd like. I always go too far when I'm zipping through commercials and have to jump back a few seconds. It'd be nice if that could be a selectable feature though.

Not a fan of the demise of the 4x FF though.

tommytrc's picture

No, I'd be happy if the snap

No, I'd be happy if the snap back was just to help you if you overshot the start of the program or segment, but it seems to snap back t the beginning of the last commercial before the segment... seems like TWC had some ad agency pressure.

Anonymous's picture

I was annoyed with the snap

I was annoyed with the snap back feature at first but now that I have been playing with it I like it. Don't stop FF until you SEE your show starting..that is what I have found out that works best. It only really snaps back a few seconds.

SeanM402's picture

I can relate, Directv has

I can relate, Directv has this same feature and when I first switched to them it drove me crazy because I was not use to having it. Now that I remember I have it I love it. I know with Directv the faster you fast forward the more it seems to jump back after you hit play.

Anonymous's picture

The new guide is lot smoother

The new guide is lot smoother then the old one. The only problem I have is that my non-hd channel like MTv are not stretched anymore. They show up as a little box on my TV. The other thing I don't like is that when you surf using just the channel button, you get channels you haven't subscribed too.

efex303's picture

Upconvert 1 for 1080p in

Upconvert 1 for 1080p in settings and upconvert 2 for 720p all channels in SD should show up in 480p .........If that does not work reset your box by pressing vol + and vol - and info all at the same time until box reboots. Should fix any problems. Had same issue in the past.

Anonymous's picture

I hate that the recorded

I hate that the recorded programs don't have any 'dates' on them. Also, when you're done watching a recorded program, it seems to go to a random spot on the list. Wish it would go to the next program on the list. Have had it for several days and there's not much I like about it. Seems to have taken a few steps backwards.

pkarm's picture

One of the things I dislike

One of the things I dislike about it is you can't select a day. In the other system you could pick MON TUES, WED etc if you want to look ahead, I can't find a way to select a specific say.

SeanM402's picture

You could have your remote

You could have your remote exchanged for a new one with the "Day Buttons". I also found the following on the internet. Not sure if it works as I don't have TWC anymore.

In the program guide, press the number button for the number of days out, that indicates the day you want to view information for. For example, if today is Wednesday and you want to see programming information for Saturday, press 3. (Saturday is three days ahead of Wednesday.)

Press the right arrow button. The program guide displays the programming information for the day you selected.

To redisplay the information for today, do either of the following: Press the number button you pressed in step 1 and press the left arrow button. Press the GUIDE button to exit the program guide and press the GUIDE button again to display the program guide.

Where and how can the old

Where and how can the old remote be exchanged for the new ones? I was of the impression there were no new ones yet.

Mark's picture

For a little while now, they

For a little while now, they seem to have been giving out newer style remotes that are similar to the grey ones they've been giving out with DVRs for years. They're all "Synergy V" remotes, but there's different "models." I believe the newer ones are "RT-U64CP". If you look at the very bottom of your remote, you'll see the actual model number. The newest ones are black in color, have "A", "B", "C", and "D" buttons, and left-right "day" toggle buttons.

Realistically, the major difference between the old grey models and the newer ones is the "D" button (which doesn't seem to do anything yet) and the "day" toggle buttons. With the "D" button, the letter buttons are laid out differently and the "exit" button is in the middle between "B" and "C", so it takes a little time to get used to them if you used your letter buttons and exit buttons a lot. But I think it's worth it to switch up to the newer remote if only for the "day" toggles.

I would try taking your remote back to the Time Warner payment center and see if you can exchange for a newer remote. Not sure if they're doing it but it's worth a shot. It does come in handy for switching between days in the guide.

Mark's picture

I believe there was a way to

I believe there was a way to toggle days if you didn't have one of the remotes with the dedicated "day" buttons. I have DVRs with one of each kind of remote at home. Once I get Navigator (hopefully tomorrow) I'll see if I can remember what it is.

SeanM402's picture

I know with AT&T Uverse you

I know with AT&T Uverse you use the FF and REW buttons to change days in the guide. With Directv you use the red and green buttons to switch in 12 hr increments. It is possible TWC may use similar methods.
